Born in Darbhanga, Bihar in 1952, he studied at Patna Science College, then earned his M. Sc. and Ph. D. at IIT Kanpur. In 1980, he returned to Patna Science College as a lecturer, teaching physics to 11th and 12th standard students using Resnick & Halliday, a textbook he admired deeply. But he kept watching bright students disengage before they ever reached the beauty of the concept. The book was written for American classrooms, its language and cultural references built around a life these rural Bihar students had never lived.
