It’s why “all happy families are alike and all unhappy families are unhappy in their own way”: You can’t hand someone instructions for that balance, it’s lived, not taught. The moment one of those conditions falters, unhappiness appears and suddenly you can advise about the cause: jealousy, poverty, neglect, betrayal. It’s like riding a bike, there’s one way to balance upright and a thousand different ways to fall. Advice thrives in unhappiness because unhappiness has explicit reasons. Happiness resists advice, because it is the product of tacit knowledge. People learn from the experiences they create for themselves and they figure it out with what they’ve done to themselves
