A penalty kick in soccer is a method of restarting play where a designated attacking player is allowed a single, uncontested shot from the 12-yard (11-meter) penalty mark, opposed only by the defending goalkeeper. It is awarded when the defending team commits a direct free-kick foul inside their own penalty box.
