In Canon cameras, EOS stands for Electro-Optical System. The term was introduced in 1987 with the launch of the EOS 650, Canon's first autofocus 35mm film camera, to highlight the new electronic communication between the camera body and its lenses. While originally associated with their autofocus capabilities, the name has since become the brand for Canon's entire range of interchangeable lens cameras, including DSLRs and mirrorless systems.
