Bharatanatyam is a classical South Indian dance form originating in the temples of Tamil Nadu, characterized by spiritual devotion, rhythmic footwork, intricate hand gestures (mudras), stylized postures, and facial expressions that convey emotions and mythological stories. The dance encompasses technical elements (Nritta), expressive storytelling (Nritya), and dramatic narration (Natya). It is one of the oldest forms of Indian classical dance and was brought to the stage in the 1930s.
