What is missing in Yammer and Present.ly

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

News: Yammer takes the top prize of USD50K at TechCrunch50 and Congratulations, Yammer, But Get Ready To Rumble!

But both services are not ready for the Enterprise.

Features yammer present.ly
Internal Deployment (Critical for IT) No Yes
Groups No Yes
Attachments No Yes
Following users and tags Yes No
Auto completion while typing Yes No
Threaded view of messages Yes No
Changing messages with version management No No
Granular Privacy Control No No
UI / Usability Better So So

Let me summarize!

The first feature of Yammer is “The Solution to Email Overload”. We need a solution to Email :-)

Anyway, what is really needed for the Enterprise

  1. Messages (that can be changed with version management)
  2. Threaded view – context is very important
  3. Groups or Granular Privacy Control at message/thread level
  4. Follow tags/users
  5. Like (FriendFeed)
  6. Hide – Ability to keep my inbox clear and clean – Hide a message a) until a reply is posted to the thread or b) permanently because I have read it and not interested (cannot contribute or interested)
  7. Views: Messages that bubble up in my inbox due to the recent activity (replies to the thread) or because of their “relative” (priority is relative) importance in my eco system !

FriendFeed on Steroids

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

If FriendFeed is Twitter on Steroids, what would be FriendFeed on Steroids?

update on 2009 Aug 16 sunday – Like Scoble, I too had great plans for friendfeed :-) But friendfeed accepted the facebook request

So I will update my wishes..

  1. add a person to an existing thread instead of having “share again”
  2. tags for “share something” – tags for the “comments” would be nice
  3. ability to “share something” to arbitrary list of nicknames and emails without need to create a room! ===> direct messages
  4. change tags with version management
  5. ordinal priority at tag intersection level and collaborative ordinal priority – first step : sort by likes+comment descending
  6. ?

An Idea for The Gmail “New Label” Interface

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

Dear Gmail

I have created lot of labels and one of them is xyz

Am looking at a mail and I want to label it xyz

There are 2 situations: Either
1) I do not remember that I created xyz or
2) Am lazy to scroll down the list of labels to look for xyz

Due to the above reasons, I click on “new label”

The pop-up is “Please enter a new label name”

I enter “xyz”

The message is “The label name you have chosen already exists. Please try another name:”

Oops. Why can’t Gmail accept this label and say

“Dear Kishore. You were lazy to select the label that already existed. I assigned the existing label. Have a nice day. Wish you a lazy day:-)”
