An Idea for The Gmail “New Label” Interface

Dear Gmail

I have created lot of labels and one of them is xyz

Am looking at a mail and I want to label it xyz

There are 2 situations: Either
1) I do not remember that I created xyz or
2) Am lazy to scroll down the list of labels to look for xyz

Due to the above reasons, I click on “new label”

The pop-up is “Please enter a new label name”

I enter “xyz”

The message is “The label name you have chosen already exists. Please try another name:”

Oops. Why can’t Gmail accept this label and say

“Dear Kishore. You were lazy to select the label that already existed. I assigned the existing label. Have a nice day. Wish you a lazy day:-)”

Why isn’t there a default label called “unread” that is automatically associated with all unread email? I’ve got some lingering unread email that could be on page 43 of 75 and it would be nice to simply show only the unread email.

Is there some way you can make the labeling process easier? I have a of labels and scrolling down to choose the right one is cumbersome. I’d like to just use an assigned shortcut for each of my labels, which would be so much faster.

But it does do that! All you need to do is press “OK” again (or hit enter again) after it’s showed you the message, and it assigns the existing label! This is precisely what I always do to label my mail, and it works great!

Betsy, you can use FF with GMail macro to quickly label a mail by keyboard macro keys like “l”.
You can check http://groups-beta.google.com/group/gmail-power-users for more details.

I can not even open GMail with out this excellent macro original by Mihai @ persistent.info

I use these labels a lot! Please see to it that once I apply a label, it should not be visible in my inbox! For example, if I apply a label in Yahoo, it creates a separate folder for it! I would love it if we have the same feature here!

  6. Daniel Falardeau Says:

One feature that would be nice is hidding some kind of messages associated with one label. That is in on click I could hide a lots of messages that is somehow important but sometime are annoying and make too much stuff on the inbox.

Pssss. I love the new label coloring that you just lunched!! It’s so helpful!

    Keep on your good work…

Why not have a label that assigns its self to all unlabled mail. I hate unlabled mail.

  8. Anand K Gupta Says:

Nikhil, you can use the keyboard macro to do it fast, ‘l’ to label a mail and ‘e’ to archive it, so that it moves out of inbox.

Daniel, you can click on the label to show all mails under it and select all and press ‘archive’ or ‘e’ for keyboard macro to hide the mails from inbox.

Brian, you can get a ‘Unlabelled’ label by using ‘Better Gmail’ FF addons, for it.
